What You Think About My Work

Here is a sculpture that I made for my Art 1010 class. I made the turtle using a platter plate, two sets of spatulas, a bowl and a spaghetti spoon the objects are wired and glued together and I have to say those 3M hanger work really really well.  i used the attached the 3M hanger to the bowl so I could attach a wire through a hole drilled into the the platter.  I then hooked the two wires that I passed though the holes and connected them together.  The hot plate holder is glued on with hot glue.  The utensils I wired together and glued them down to the platter.  Then wired down the utensils through the holes I drilled into the platter.  Then attached the bowl to the platter.

I call the piece "Swimming Sea Turtle"

The idea for the piece came from inspiration while sitting watching T.V. with my kids and if you must know the show it was Barbie’s Mermaidia.  Though the piece didn’t turn out like I thought and had some editing along the way I feel that the overall visual effect of the piece works well.  The idea really just kind of hit me after thinking about the objects around the house that I might be able to use.   The idea about what I might be able to create seemed to all come together at that moment while sitting with my kids.

When I fist thought of the piece I wanted to use a wooden burl bowl for the shell but was told otherwise.  The bowl that I did use was glass so I needed to find a way to attach it to the other objects with out it shattering.  The solution that I came up with, was to use 3M hangers and use them to attach it to the other items.  The idea of the platter I do have to say wasn’t mine. In fact it was my daughter’s she saw it in Ikea and thought it would look good as water, and I agreed.   it also solve the problem of using a glass plate to hold the turtle together and attaching both sides. I did have other spoons and bolts that I planed on using for the head of the Turtle but made the turtle look aesthetically unpleasing.  So i did what I thought was best and eliminated them and let the viewer create the imagery of the head, keeping the design of the object very simple.

I wish that I had more time to think of how to create the piece and time to gather parts that would provide the look I wanted.  I think that the overall visual look of the piece would have a greater impact if I had the materials and time.  The natural wood burl bowl for the shell would have provided a greater contrast and emulated the look of a shell better.  Even if I had to look for it for two to three months I think it would have been worth the time to created that visual look.

The blue platter is to emulate water that the sea turtle is swimming.  The shell is the green bowl and I used the hot plate holder to provide some texture to the shell. I really wish that I could have used the wood burl bowl I think that would have looked even better but that's compromise.  The spaghetti spoon is the head. I thought about adding some other elements but they distracted form the overall image of what I was trying to show allowing the viewer to finish the image of the head in their own mind.  The four spatula's are the flippers of the turtle I uses two mixing spatula for the front flippers and two turning spatula for the rear flippers. The entire piece is held together with about two and a half feet of wire and hot glue and three 3M hangers. I think the overall image of the turtle works really well.  The piece is a wall mounted piece that is about 15"x22" the Turtle alone is 13"x13" and sits about 4 1/2" off the platter.
